'The Punjab Herald' was started in Feb. 2014 with the sole purpose of promoting Punjabi ethos and nomenclature and synthesizing it with the Aussie culture and zeitgeist. Secondly, the editor of this newsmagazine has been a voracious reader of English and Punjabi literature and has also been writing in both the languages since 1980. Though he was published by the renowned papers like The Tribune, Chandigarh and Vipula, Hyderabad, in eighties and nineties, yet his desire to see himself in print the way he wished was not being fulfilled by a paper in which he had been appearing for a long time. After getting fed up with the slovenly style of that paper a step was taken by the editor to initiate a venture by which his pursuit of writing could effloresce. As a result, 'The Punjab Herald', a bilingual newsmagazine, came into existence. Since its inception the readers and the advertisers have shown so much interest in it that it has started emulating the well established media of Sydney. Mrs. Amarjit Kaur, the wife of the editor, has also played a dominant role through her computer skill for making this venture a grand success. With the passage of time some journalists and litterateurs came into the contact of the editor and now they are making good contribution to the content of the paper. The editor, Dr. Avtar S. Sangha, was lecturer in English at B.A.M Khalsa College Garhshankar (Pb.) and D.A.V. College Chandigarh before immigrating to Sydney in 2000. He had done M.A. in English from university campus Chandigarh in 1974. He was also able to complete his Ph.D. on post-war American novelist Thomas Pynchon in 1988. In NSW, Australia, he completed his Graduate Diploma in Education from university of New England, Armidale, in 2008. Since then he has been working as a teacher of English and History in the schools and colleges of Sydney. In 1982 and 1988 he had also published two small books of short fiction in English under the titles 'Storm in a Teacup and other Stories' and 'The Harmonies'. In 2009 came his first book in Punjabi under the title 'Sidni dian Rail gaddian' (Sydney Trains) which is a beautiful commentary on the life of migrants in Australia and other developed countries. He got his first novel published in Punjabi 2011 under the title 'Dilhu Mohabat jin...' (Those who have Sincere Love). Then in 2013 came his anthology of short stories in Punjabi entitled 'Billauri Akhaan'. His second novel '.....te Parikhiya Chaldi Rahi'(The Ongoing Test) has been appearing in 'The Punjab Herald' since 2014. He has also written many articles and essays both in English and Punjabi, apart from the research articles which had appeared in some literary journals and books of India.
